"Can an Urban Stream Restore Itself?" (Houston, TX)
"In order to answer the question of whether an urban stream can restore itself, we first have to ask: what do we mean by restore?  All too often, what is meant by restoration is stabilize. Stop the river from moving. Stop the channel from shifting. Stop the banks from eroding.  From our point of view and that of many scientists, stabilizing – or attempted stabilizing — is killing the river. A river, in order to be alive, in order to be healthy, to be biologically diverse, to serve its purpose of cleansing the water and sustaining life, needs room to move. In order to restore itself and adjust to floods and high flows, a river has to move..."

"Austin’s sewage sludge could roll down to Fayette County" (Ellinger, TX)
"Austin’s sewage sludge might soon be headed to ranchland 70 miles southeast of the city, near the Colorado River in eastern Fayette County... But some in Fayette County say the 1,665-acre proposed site is the wrong place for sludge... County Judge Ed Janecka said as much as two-thirds of the proposed sludge site is in the Colorado River flood plain..."

"Cleanup plans could give San Jacinto River new life" (Houston, TX)
"The San Jacinto River's west fork runs for 35 miles below the Lake Conroe dam, providing alternate glimpses of tall pines and gravel mines, willow oaks and busy overpasses. "Another man gets sick from 'flesh-eating' bacteria after visiting Texas Gulf Coast beach" (Port Aransas, TX)
"Another man has been diagnosed with an infection from a "flesh-eating" bacteria after a trip to a Texas Gulf Coast beach.  KXAN-TV reported that 42-year-old Adrian Ruiz became sick after a Father's Day trip to the beach with his family in Port Aransas. The news station reported that he was running a fever within a day and had a rash on his leg. Ruiz' doctor told him that he had developed an infection from Vibrio, a bacteria that lurks in all saltwater and brackish water..."

"Kayak completes Australia to New Zealand voyage, without paddler" (Australia)
"Stuart Cleary set out in late 2014 to paddle solo from Australia to New Zealand. But in the end, it was his homemade kayak that completed the 1,200-mile journey on its own. Just hours into the trip, Cleary ran into equipment problems. Later, his kayak started taking on water, and he was forced to abandon the vessel before being rescued at sea. Eighteen months later, the kayak has washed up on a New Zealand beach close to where Cleary had intended to make landfall..."
