Houston Canoe Club
General Membership Meeting
May 11th, 2016
Bayland Park Community Center
Recorder: Frank Ohrt

7:06

The Commodore called the meeting to order. She introduced Ann Derby as the club Sergeant-at-Arms, in charge of setting up and taking down the audio-visual equipment at each meeting. She next introduced the club officers. (The Fleet Captain was absent.) She reported on the pre-meeting dinner at an Ethiopian restaurant, and asked for suggestions for other places where we might have our pre-meeting dinners.

7:10

The Commodore asked for a vote to accept the minutes of the previous meeting. They were accepted, without exception.  (Except for the April Fool's joke that they contained...)

7:11

Harmon Everett, the President Emeritus and acting Webmaster, spoke on changes to the website format, resulting from changes made by the website hosting organization. He mentioned the possibility of a club phone app in the near future.

7:13

The Newsletter Editor described finding a cache of old photographs of club activities and putting them on the website. He then showed us some, so we could see how far we’ve fallen.

7:22

The Purser gave the club financial report. We’re OK

7:24

The Boatswain announced that member Malcolm Le Fevre was present at his first meeting. (He’s from out of town.) Welcome to the club, Malcolm!

7:25

The Fleet Captain being absent, the Commodore asked for trip reports. Mark Andrus reported on the Hidalgo Falls Festival. The Commodore then asked for announcements of future trips:
  • May 15 - Tom Douglas will lead a trip on Turtle Bayou, weather permitting.
  • May 22 - Tom also will lead a trip on Lake Charlotte and the Trinity River bottoms.
  • May 28-29 - Christy Long will lead an overnight trip on the Colorado River.
7:37

Fraser Baker gave the Safety Ten Minutes about bacterial sepsis, an uncommon but real threat to paddlers with any open wounds while paddling. Clean it up! Disinfect it!  Get a tetanus shot every five years! Sepsis is no fun!

7:46

The Vice-Commodore introduced Aaron Lowe, the manager of the Bissonnet location of Austin Canoe and Kayak. who spoke about his life in the outdoors and safety on the water.

8:35

The meeting was adjourned. Unbelievably, some of us went to Jax’s for food and adult refreshment.

Houston Canoe Club
Online Board Meeting
May 4th
, 2016
Recorder: Fran Wilcox

Meeting was conducted through Join.Me. Those in attendance were Honey Leveen, Fran Wilcox, Terry Herdlicka, Harmon Everett, Bob Naeger, John Rich and Frank Ohrt. Natalie Wiest was not available for this meeting.

Bob Naeger gave the Treasurer’s Report – there is nothing noteworthy to report. Membership income/projections were too high so we are lagging behind income wise. We will address the budget at our Club meeting.

Terry Herdlicka gave the Membership Report - we have 1 new member as of today (Wed the 4th of May).

Trip Reports – Natalie was unavailable.

Programming Report – Aaron Lowe will speak at our May Meeting – he is the Manager of Austin Canoe and Kayak on Bissonnet.

Webmaster Report – Harmon Everett discussed using the 3rd party waiver service (Smart Waiver Service) to help with our liability waivers. The cost may have been raised to $15.00 per month or $180.00 per year. As this cost is well below our $500.00 allowance we do not have to present this to the membership for a vote. Harmon will procure this service.

Holiday Party –the party will be held on the 10th of December at Bob’s church. Discussion ensued regarding location/directions. Several members will be cell phone contacts in the event anyone has difficulty finding this location. Honey will write an article in the newsletter for this.

Serving next year – Honey has committed to another year, Fran and Bob will be out as of December. Terry will let us know closer to the end of the year. This information will be given to Joe Coker and Christy Long.

Safety minute – Frazier will give the safety minute for the May meeting on flesh-eating bacteria.

Stationary – at this time there is enough stationary for this year. We have several different styles and it appears that the “drippy” one is the least favorite.

Additional points – Harmon has suggested that the board members write a list of their duties in the event that someone needs to step in and take over.

We will need to contact Bayland Park if we are not using the center for Board meetings: 713-541-9951
