Afloat! A Parade on Water
Co-sponsored by Houston Chronicle and Buffalo Bayou Partnership
Part of Transported + Renewed

Saturday, October 4, 2014, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Allen’s Landing to 901 N. York St. (across from Tony Marron Park, 808 N. York St.)

Known to many as the Bayou City, Houston can trace its very roots to the vast network of waterways that crisscross the urban landscape. Afloat!, the first in a series of parades organized as part of Houston Arts Alliance’s three-month Transported + Renewed project, is a celebration of all things on the water. Adventure seekers are invited to join in a spectacular boat procession from Allen’s Landing, the site of our city’s founding, to Houston’s East End, a harbinger of our city’s future on Saturday, September 13, 2014 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Featuring people-powered canoes, kayaks, paddle boats, row boats and dragon boats, alongside a fleet of police and fire department boats, and the infamous Mighty Tidy, a boat used by the Buffalo Bayou Partnership to keep our bayou system clean, Afloat! shines a light on Houston’s waterborne transportation system. Also, spectators should be on the lookout for Whatever Floats, a giant inflatable sculpture by Houston artist Sharon Engelstein, anchored in the water near the finish line.

Come float with us! Boat aficionados can become part of the parade by registering their boat!

Registration Deadline Extended To: Friday, October 3, 2014

Space is limited so early registration is suggested. Participants are encouraged to embrace their creative side by decorating their boats and donning costumes. Awards for the “Funkiest Floater” and “Cutest Crew” will be presented at the post-parade party at the finish line, located at 901 York Street.

Public viewing locations for Afloat! can be accessed along the 2.2 mile bike trail system on the south side of Buffalo Bayou between Allen’s Landing and N. York Street.

Take a bike!
