"Buffalo Bayou Regatta" (Houston, TX)
"Join us for our 42nd Buffalo Bayou Regatta, Texas’ largest canoe and kayak race! Houstonians (ages 12 and up) are encouraged to participate in the 15-mile ACA sanctioned race along the scenic Buffalo Bayou, whether you are entering competitively, or paddling for pleasure, we encourage you to enter the Regatta. Those not wanting to paddle can catch the outdoor fun and cheer on the racers. Over 500 canoes and kayaks participate. Beginner and competitive paddlers alike are welcome to join in on the fun. When? Saturday, March 15th, 2014...

"Stainless steel canoe appears in the trees along Buffalo Bayou" (Houston, TX)
"Houston artist John Runnels' latest signature stainless steel canoe is ensconced in metal tree tops along Buffalo Bayou. Runnels has 11 other boat sculptures on the bayou and put the finishing touches on his latest creation Friday. It's at the bayou's Crosby Outfall, just west of Sabine Street near Allen Parkway..."

"New development, dog waste blamed for excessive bacteria in San Jacinto River" (Houston, TX)
"Pulling his paddle through the rippling water, John Bartos glides his canoe along the upper reaches of the San Jacinto River. His eyes search the tree-lined banks and white sandbars for wildlife. "This is where the white bass come to spawn. You can also see eagles, osprey, blue heron, even bobcats," said Bartos, Houston Canoe Club's conservation chairman... Many of those frolicking in San Jacinto's west and east forks and a northern sliver of Lake Houston are unaware that these waterways have exceeded the state standard for bacteria contaminants - namely human and animal feces... "Bill would open Yellowstone rivers to paddlers"
"A U.S. House bill would end 60-year-old regulations that limit the use of canoes, kayaks and rafts on certain lakes and rivers in Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park and the National Elk Refuge, but conservation groups are concerned the legislation bypasses some public processes..."

"Transatlantic kayaker waves off rescue"
"Aleksander Doba, a 67-year-old retired engineer and Polish kayaker, is about 900 miles from Florida's coast, steadily paddling on a solo, unsupported expedition across the Atlantic Ocean. On December 23, 2013 the U.S. Coast Guard received the message "HELP" from Doba's kayak in the middle of the Atlantic. They asked a ship they knew was in the area to see if the Polish kayaker needed help. Doba, completely taken by surprised by the large tanker's arrival at his small kayak, seemed to have pressed the alarm button by accident..."

"Buck Crossing" (Florida)
"Joey Tharp and his friend Chris Murray recently went fishing to Gap Pond in the Florida Panhandle, when they saw an interesting sight. "While fishing I look over and see a good buck swimming out in the middle of the lake, said Tharp. I could see the buck's horns from over 250 yds away..."

"Fugitives Lead Police on Canoe Chase" (Gainesville, FL)
"Using a canoe, Garrett Eure and Jessie Bryant managed to elude authorities for about five hours before they were caught, after a 9-mile journey down the river... Eure and Bryant had suspected that authorities had found them and they ran to the Withlacoochee River, climbed into a canoe and tried to escape... Officials used K9s to track the fugitives on foot and then a motorboat to chase and catch the fugitives on the river..."

"Australian police seize $160 million worth of meth" (Sydney, Australia)
"Australian police seized about $160 million worth of methamphetamine hidden inside kayaks shipped from China, officials said. Five people were arrested in Sydney after customs officials discovered 403 pounds of meth while inspecting a shipment of kayaks from China..."

"Two brothers drown after canoe overturns" (Ohatchee, AL)
"An early morning fishing trip turned tragic when two brothers died after their canoe overturned. Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown said the incident happened sometime around 1 a.m. in Ohatchee. Xao Le, 44, and Cong Le, 28, his brother, both of Jacksonville, were fishing with nets when their canoe overturned..."

"Man found dead after kayak overturns" (Portland, OR)
"Multnomah County deputies responded to a report of an overturned kayaker in need of help in the Multnomah Channel on Friday. Two men were in the kayak when it capsized near McNary Lake. A 27-year-old man managed to swim to shore and get someone there to call 911. The 41-year-old man, Dim Dy, was found dead..."
