Board of Officers Meetings
1st Wednesday of each month
by John Rich

Many of you are regular attendees of the club general membership meetings, which are held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month.  In these meetings a variety of topics are covered, including subjects such as club news, paddling safety and a featured guest speaker.

But what some of you may not be aware of, is that there is an additional meeting each month on the 1st Wednesday of each month for the Board of Officers, which oversee the club business.  These nine individuals selflessly volunteer their time to ensure smooth operation of the club.  This includes not just the obvious club functions such as leading paddling trips, but also aspects such as legal issues, finances, taxes and training, amongst others.

These individuals gather together in the library/conference room of the Baytown Community Center to discuss current issues, plan future strategies, and ensure smooth operation of the club.  It's all sort of behind-the-scenes and most members wouldn't even know it's happening.  But because it does, it helps to ensure the orderly operation of the club for everyone.

As an example, topics of conversation at the February meeting included:
• The guest speakers for the upcoming general membership meetings
• Upcoming "Safety Minute" presentations
• Safety posters available from the ACA
• The club financial budget
• Trip leader awards
• Renewal of expired members
• Membership level
• 100-mile paddling awards
• Gifts for the guest speakers
• Training for Boy Scouts
Each month can be different, as issues vary from month to month, but there are also regular items which are touched upon to see if any special attention is needed.  That list gives an idea of the kind of stewardship that occurs out of sight of the general membership.  If you've ever wondered why things seem to happen so smoothly (or not!), it's the actions of these volunteers who spend several hours each month taking care of club business on behalf of the membership.

Many good men and women have served their time as an HCC officer, and we're all better off for  it.  And when the time is right, you can step forward and serve also.  No special qualifications are required, just a love for paddling, which you already have, and the desire to help others achieve the same.
