HOUSTON CANOE CLUB GENERAL MEETING
October 12th, 2011

Commodore Ken McDowell called the meeting to order, welcomed everyone, and introduced the officers.

Boatswain Honey Leveen introduced and welcomed guests.. She and five other members had dinner at 
Tierras Colombianas restaurant before the meeting, and she plans to do it again prior to the November meeting. She needs someone to help her with the membership table before the meetings. Anyone interested please e-mail or call her. 

Ken McDowell gave a Safety Minute on the importance of carrying a whistle.

Recorder John Ohrt read the minutes of the last general meeting. A motion was made and seconded to accept them as read. The motion passed.

Conservation Chair John Bartos discussed the potential closing of a portion of the San Marcos River at I-35 by the Texas Dept. of Transportation (TxDot) while they construct a new bridge at Thompsons Island. He will keep us informed as to what TxDot finally decides to do.

Purser Harmon Everett gave the financial report.

Fleet Captain Paul Woodcock gave the trip report. Past trips included the paddle at Sargent to benefit their library, whitewater at the Ocoee River drawdown in Tennessee, the Fall Fling trip on Lake Charlotte, and a fossil hunt on the Brazos. Upcoming trips included the dragon boat race, the San Antonio River at Goliad, the San Marcos over New Years, and Boquillas Canyon in Big Bend in January. Ken KcDowell introduced the nominating committee: John Bartos, Christy Long, and Ken McDowell. The proposed slate of officers to be voted on in November are:

There were no nominations from the floor.

Note: There is no general meeting at Bayland in December; the Christmas party takes its place.  Watch the newsletter and web site for details.

There was a two part program. The first part was a presentation by the Texas Dragon Boat Association. They have approximately 100 teams in the Houston area and an active schedule of races. It takes 30 people to sign up to form a team. The second part was a presentation by Ken McDowell on sea kayaking in Brazil.

After the program there was a silent auction for items mostly donated by Judy Wild. With the proceeds going to the club Safety and Education Fund.

The meeting was adjourned.
