Assistance to Boy Scout canoeing and kayaking vent...
Author Last Post

Natalie,

I'm in for all or part of the event.

As an ACA Instructor and a former Scout, this is "what we live for".

Since I live north of Houston, so its not a big deal to attend every day.

I will contact Michelle by Email as soon as we get the address (I think she's in Hawaii and phone calls will be tricky)

Charles

Natalie, could you share her email address? Thanks, Pharr

I have received the note below requesting assistance for an April event. If you can help, please respond directly to Ms. Dilday. The attachments she refers to are not included here but I'm sure she will share with you.

Good afternoon, Natalie,

I hope this email finds you and your family safe and warm. Please let me introduce myself, my name is Michelle Dilday and I'm the 2021 Powder Horn Course Director for the Boy Scouts of America's Sam Houston Area Council here in Houston. The Powder Horn course is designed to help the unit by introducing youth and adult Scouting leaders to safely conduct outdoor/high-adventure activities of a fun and challenging nature. This course provides an introduction to the resources needed to successfully lead youth through a program of outdoor adventure and is based upon giving participants an exposure to some outdoor/high-adventure activities.

My Powder Horn course is scheduled to be held at our council's new camp (Camp Strake) in Coldsprings, Texas on April 15 - 18, 2021. I was wondering if you have any volunteers that would be available to come and teach some of our Scouts and Adult volunteers about canoeing and kayaking. We will have canoes and kayaks available for our participants to use. (Attached is an activity description & consultant information sheet for your review.)

We are looking to have this activity on either Friday (April 16) or Saturday (April 17) either as morning (8:00a - 12:00p) or afternoon (1:00p - 5:00p) session. Please let myself or my Assistant Course Director of Programs, Clay Dilday (cc'd on this email/p: 808-630-7561) know how many volunteers you will have and which day and time your volunteers are available to present the canoeing sessions.

We are expecting to have 48 participants on the course and you will have three 1.5 hour rotation sessions with 16 participants per session for this activity. The 90 minute time limit per session will give the presentator both presentation and demonstration time plus time for the participants to get into a canoe/kayak. I'm not expecting every participant to get into a canoe but I would like for them to learn the basics as well as receive resource information for them to take back to their home Scouting units.

Could you please let me know if this activity is possible for any volunteers from your association by February 28, 2021? If you have any questions or need anything from myself or Clay, please don't hesitate to reach out to us via telephone or email.

Thanks so much for your time and I hope to hear from you soon about the potential of volunteering with our Scouting program.

Cheers,

Michelle
