Intro to the Brazos Trip Saturday, January 30
Author Last Post

Just like a Kayak only a little wetter!

How's your canoe roll?

I have been a Canoeist since Middle School, but I do have a couple of Kayaks.

I jokingly tell my Kayaking Students that Kayaks are for people that can't figure out how to paddle a canoe!

Tim, I feel your pain. But let's watch the language.... the "k" word seems a bit strong!

Speaking of tow lines - are you paddling tandem then? Inquiring open boaters want to know.... Haha

I have dealt with many situations with wind in my canoe. Cotton Bayou and Lake Charlotte on the open water in a canoe is challenging, but I've learned to deal with it.

Your Keewaydin is lower profile than most canoes. You should be fine.

Any way, any day on the water is better than listening to the "Weather Guessers" screw up our trip.

If need be, I have a tow line. LOL

I think I see a kayak in my future

The gust speeds are a heck of a lot of wind. That can catch the side of your boat and spin you around like a top. 10-15 mph can be annoying, but can be managed. You might have to paddle on the lee side of the wind more strongly to counter-act it's attempt to turn you. How bad it is will depend upon the angle of the wind to the bow. If it's behind you, it helps push you along. It head-on, it'll slow you down, and you just have to concentrate on not letting the bow turn off the wind line to where it catches it, and it doesn't take much. The Brazos has a lot of meanders in that stretch that wander in all directions, so you'll be paddling in all possible directions relative to the wind. If you can get underneath the river bank on the up-wind side of the river, that helps the wind blow over top of you without being able to dip down onto the water and affect your boat. But no doubt, if that wind forecast comes true, there will be some areas where it will make things difficult. Sometimes I'll get tired of fighting the wind and just let the wind do what it wants, and drift with the current for forward progress, and if that happens to be sideways or backwards, so be it. When the wind slacks off, you can set things straight again. :-)

A question about the Brazos and wind. I'm never paddled this river and am wondering if we will have high banks and tress for some wind protection between hwy's 290 & 159? Dark Sky is showing winds from the S & SW at 10 to 15, with gust 23 to 33mph. That's a lot of wind on the nose of an open solo boat.

I want to paddle, but am not looking for a war with Mother Nature. I'd love to hear that this can still be an enjoyable trip.

Not sure what the problem is, but I am able to register anyone who wants to be. We have five slots left. If you want to go, e-mail me and I'll take care of it.

Just tried again and same results.

Can you sign me up and let me know the details for Saturday?

Charles

I believe I fixed it!

No idea why this is being contrary. It appears that I can register anybody, so if you want to register just send me an e-mail and I'll sign you up. Meanwhile, I'll see if I can fix it.

I had the same problem and Bruce registered for me. I can sign in (obviously or I would not be able to access this forum) but am not permitted to register. Russian bots again......

Same here. Auto response is "It looks like you can't register for this event." Is it already full??

I have trying to register for this paddle and the site won't allow me?

Come out and paddle the Brazos from US 290 to SH 159. This is a nice manageable section of the river, and interesting with both nature and history. There are no unusual hazards in this section and the put in and take out are pretty easy by the standards of the river. The distance is only about 14.5 miles and there's enough current to keep you moving.

Register through the club website. Registration is limited to ten. This will reuire a shuttle so adherence to best practices for COVID will be required.
