HomeNL-2022-12 9 Goliad Fall Flotilla

Goliad Fall Flotilla
November 5, 2022
by Fran Wilcox

This is always a pretty paddle, but the weather is usually forecast as either cold, rainy or both.  Well, that happened again this year and we ended up with great weather.

The Fall Flotilla is a 6.6-mile float down the San Antonio River from the put in at the Highway 59 Bridge to the takeout at Goliad State Park. The folks from the SARA (San Antonio River Authority) assist with everything including getting you in the water and out of the water – and your boat, too!

This is a free paddle! It is part of the Texas Paddling Trail and this year 45 people registered.

We had five club members in attendance – Christy L, Pam and Ricky J, Peggy S and Fran W. Some of us camped in the State Park, which is always fun.

We were on the water by 11 am and floated until 1:30 pm. We had two kingfishers follow and keep up with us and the native riparian flowers were a treat. The asters were beautiful!

Goliad is approximately a two-hour drive from Houston and although the paddle isn’t very taxing, camping and visiting this quaint town and its missions make for a great weekend.

We’re planning on this Fall Flotilla for next year.
