Cedar Bayou Voyager
October 15, 2016
by Julie Hammond

I must give a kudos to the Cedar Bayou Friends for the really nice paddle on the 2016 Cedar Bayou Voyager.

There were 3 Houston Canoe Club Members; Julie Hammond, Fran Wilcox, Cindy Cannon. We were treated like "QUEENS" sorry guys.

When we got on the shuttle bus we were greeted with a goodie bag. In this bag were numerous goodies including a really neat fan small enough for back packing; manual of course but none the less really neat. The high light goodie was the fanny pack dry bag we received. It's a fanny pack with 3 zip-lock closures then velcro over and it keeps your phone, keys and other goodies dry. The bus shuttled us back to our boats where we were instructed when it was time to launch. They had a boat launch where you got in your boat and the Sea Scouts pushed or launched you out. This was really neat and they did have lots of Scouts.

We continued down the bayou with a beautiful breeze and lots of nature to take in. Nice easy paddle. When arriving at the half way point we were again greeted by the Sea Scouts who were patiently waiting our arrival to assist us in getting out of our boats. There were two nice angled docks there with lots of Scouts to assist. Once out of our boats we were greeted with lots of water, fruit and snacks. We took a break and rested, restroom before continuing on.

Once we continued on, this section we saw lots of birds.

When arriving at the take out point, the Sea Scouts were there again patiently waiting to assist us in getting out of our boats and loading on our cars if necessary.

At the take out point the Cedar Bayou Friends had lots of door prizes and all 3 Houston Canoe Club Members won in the drawing.  Fran and Cindy won calculators, Julie won a camping flash light. We were all 3 wishing we had won the Yeti Cooler.

It was an enjoyable trip and this is a trip I would do again. The Cedar Bayou Friends work really hard putting this on. The Fire Dept was patrolling the water to ensure safety on the water. The Sea Scouts working hard assisting everyone on and off the water. From experience I know it is not easy to go around and get donations for all these free prizes they gave away. In addition to the water, fruit and snacks they offered at the mid way point.

Look for this trip on next years calendar.

Best Regards,
Julie Hammond
