HomeNL-2023-04 9 Trash Bash Cleanup

Trash Bash at Armand Bayou
March 25, 2023
by Natalie Wiest

March 25 dawned cool and beautiful as our group assembled at Bay Area Park to participate in the Rivers, Lakes and Bayous Trash Bash.  There were 10 of us in all, 4 tandem canoes and 2 kayaks.  Galveston Bay Foundation coordinated this segment of the Trash Bash and quickly got us ready for action.

This day we had plenty of water and launching from the boat ramp was relatively easy.

Christy Long initiated her granddaughter, Julie, to the fine art of cleanup.

The good news and for the bayou as well, there was relatively little trash to pick up.  One of my first finds was a blue vodka bottle, full of mud, and a can of sprite which of course I had to discover was full and pressurized.

It was fun having more tandems than solos on the river.  Newcomer Bob Spiegelhauer brought his canoe to share with partner Harmon Everett.  Tom Douglas and Linda Shead also tandemed, as did Christy and Julie, and my daughter Ellen and I.

We had some nice birds, including this yellow crowned night heron.

It was fun to paddle again with Amy McGee in her orange kayak, and Alice Nissen with her sit-on-top.  Two miles slid below our hulls with a very relaxed pace.

We didn’t set any records for trash pickup, but it was a good excuse to be on the bayou.  We all dined afterward on delectable hot dogs, potato chips ad chocolate chip cookies.  Life is good!
